UNITED STATES IMPLEMENTS CITES REGULATIONS
The Management Authority of the United States has announced the following.

The United States wishes to inform Parties that its CITES implementing regulations published in August 2007 require that scientific names used on CITES permits and certificates accompanying specimens imported into or exported/re-exported from the United States be in accordance with the names used in the CITES Appendices or the nomenclatural references adopted by the Conference of the Parties. This requirement is consistent with the language of Resolution Conf. 12.3 (Rev. CoP14), Annex 1, paragraph e).

The United States will no longer accept CITES permits or certificates that use scientific names that are not recognized in the CITES Appendices or the standard nomenclatural references, or that are recognized only as synonyms.

The United States also wishes to remind Parties that its regulations require that all CITES documents presented at the time of import into the United States must have been validated or certified by the inspecting authority at the time of export or re-export, as indicated in Resolution Conf. 12.3 (Rev. CoP14), Annex 1, paragraph p).

In short: only scientific species names as defined by CITES will be accepted in permits.
